A Fruitful experience through Activities

“Can you clap your hands?” asked Hui Wai Hong. The kindergarten girl clapped happily as told and our Choi Hung boys were thrilled. On Dec 3, 2011, Choi Hung boys helped organized a game stall in the open day of Kam Lam Kindergarten. The English Ambassadors of Choi Hung Estate Catholic Secondary School designed an educational game in which students had to listen to English instructions and act them out.

Chan Kwai Lun, a Secondary four student said, “It never crosses my mind that being a teacher can be that challenging. There was a student who didn’t know what stamp your feet was and I tried explaining to him. It took me so long.” “You have to be very patient, too,” added Yuen Ka Kit, another English Ambassador. “Being a little teacher for a morning in a kindergarten made me become more mature and understanding.”

On the same day, a primary six mock interview was conducted in Choi Hung Estate Catholic Secondary School. More than 300 primary students from 9 different schools and their parents came. Choi Hung English Ambassadors acted as interviewers and gave advice to primary students on presentation and group interaction skills.

“It was such hard work before the primary six mock interview day. English Ambassadors had to go through training and were lectured by teachers,” said Chan Lok Hin. “I once wanted to give up but I am glad I didn’t,” he went on. After the mock interview day, we realized how important it is to pay attention in class. By putting what we learnt into practice, we see our own strengths and weaknesses in English and realized that English is not just a subject but a tool. “Learning should not and should never be confined in classrooms. Through servicing kindergarten and primary students, we are more aware of our roles in the society. I am grateful that the school has offered us such opportunities to learn English in an authentic and meaningful way,” remarked Chan Lok Hin.
